Tweaked, I now have a poster sized version about 13 by 19 inches, which I'll varnish over and continue to build up with paints.
About two thirds up the Celtic ladder are the retinue/kin fighters for chiefs and successful champions, though successful by their own right, these men seek to propel themselves to greater fortunes by hanging on to the truly elite. They where commonly armored in chain mail jerkins, terminating at short sleeve length, and shields with larger bosses then their lower class counterparts. The diversity of armaments for this stage of soldier becomes truly varied as they have enough spending money to decide for themselves whether an intimidating hairdo, or a properly fitted helmet was preferable but in later periods the search for heavier armor is a constant. Though not the equivalent in armor of the first century roman legionnaire they wield a far more intimidating celtic longsword and outclassed the majority of all combatants in the European theater.
Their organizations where largely made up of extended cousin/kin groups, loyal to a clan unit, but it was not uncommon for such soldiers to form mercenary companies or to a more bizarre extreme, mercenary countries.

The pants are probably my favoruite part of this piece; though the whole piece is very interesting to me. I like the red border for his shield, too; it matches his hair.
