Celtic Battlements 4

Description

This is the product of about 16 hours of work, divided between today and yesterday and counting the line art

After the last two uploads I wanted to try a more ambitious fortress project, this picture sees two hill forts on opposite peaks connected by a sky bridge, miles in the distance is the protected oppida. Extensive fortress rings where common in the Celtic world, with architectural feats being made with wooden timber, rather then Mediterranean marble. Such efforts often included man made earth works, which would then be further developed with stone, or in this case wooden walls.

Wooden walls themselves where rarely intended to be the actual sight of battle, but where used to force enemies to attack in mass at one point and leave all flanking opportunities to the defenders, Celtic fortresses built on this principal, the significant height advantage afforded to them made their slingers a feared and crucial element of any siege. In one unearthed oppida a total of 10,000 sharpened sling stones where found, suggesting that maintenance and preparation for counter sieges was a considerable affair and never far from the conscience of the occupants. Still the majority of the Celts considered the Oppidum to be expendable, in the face of an invading enemy and on any number of occasions would simply abandon them in the face of the enemy.

I'm happier with the line art then the color job but I needed the practice coloring more diverse surfaces So far the only parts I've really nailed down here are the ravens and the grass. I think i'm getting close with the sky but I've definitely got to find something different for wood and straw surfaces.

Does anyone else think I should make the eyes redder?

I like this, and the connection with ravens/crows.
